VW Nationals 2008

I travelled to Cambridge this Easter for the 2008 New Zealand Volkswagen Nationals hosted by the Waikato VW Club. After flying up to Auckland early Friday morning I was met at the airport by Philip Coyle (author of '50 Years of Volkswagens in New Zealand'). We drove back to his Mum's place in Whenuapai, and prepared his '56 oval window beetle and his '63 left hand drive ragtop beetle for travel.

Being a public holiday long weekend, the traffic driving out of Auckland was appalling, it took us about two and a half hours to travel as far as Huntly. I drove the '56 oval with a huge grin on my face despite the traffic jams we encountered.

Saturday saw the Show and Shine event take place in the Cambridge town square. The weather was awesome and there was a good turnout from the public. Here's a selection of some of my favourites from the show:

Sunday saw a convoy leave for the hamilton City Gardens. I got to drive the first-place getting modified Kombi (owned by fellow Canterbury VW club member Peter Vaughan, and sporting a grunty 2110cc engine!) which was very cool.

After the farewell breakfast on Monday morning we departed for Auckland again, and this time I drove the '63 left hand drive ragtop beetle with the full-length sunroof pulled back and the sun pouring in. It was quite interesting driving on the other side of the car, and I found my left hand twitching every time I came to change gear -- otherwise it wasn't much different to a regular right hand drive car.

Bring on next Easter and the 2009 VW Nationals in the Napier
